Many of the Chinese immigrants who came to work on the railroads stayed for a myriad of jobs in Portland as laborers while others started businesses. Some were hired by the city to move Tanner Creek underground. They began farming the land by it, creating abundant Chinese gardens growing beautiful vegetables.
The vegetable peddlers became a permanent part of the streetscape, introducing market-oriented gardening, perhaps inspiring our culture and commitment to locally grown vegetables.
