Black Light Susans

Kris Schmolze

Medium: Mixed media

Black Light Susans is an Ultra-Violet light installation of painted paper flowers spanning across walls, through openings, leading the viewer through space into other dimensions. Things that seem connected are so in simultaneous states between natural light and ultraviolet light. These two states exist at the same time like a particle and a wave in quantum mechanics. This bridge between multiple states of existence indicates an interconnectedness to multiple universes.

Here’s where the installation becomes an adventure! Can you find similarities between each flower? If there are any differences what are they? Which ones stand out the most and why? The clear blue UV paint hides colors underneath when exposed to UV light while revealing those colors with regular light. Feel free to explore these differences with your phone’s light up close. Keep in mind that they are delicate paper flowers you can touch but do not pull on them please.
